The theme for today's discussion was "time."(We started with thinking of specific questions related to the theme.)
We first discussed how to use time effectively and then questions like "why do we want to live lif effectively?" "what do we mean by 'effective' in the first place?" stemmed out. For today, we thought that "living life effectively" is nearly equal to "living life doing something valuable for you." From that point, we discussed question regarding the meaning of life and value incorporating perspectives of Christianity, modern vs. early time's lifestyle, and so on.
Discussion 15 Which is happier, a slow-paced life or a fast-paced life?

We started defining what "happiness" means in the first place. While discussing, it was revealed that the interpretation of the word "happiness" greatly differed among participants. For some, happiness is something you feel each moment and easily gained or lost. For others, happiness has more weight and is different from having fun, feeling pleasure, and appreciating everyday life. Although it was undoubtedly a difficult topic, I was happy to see participants understanding that there are several way in which a single concept is interpreted and reexamining their previous viewpoint.
Discussion 14 Why are we afraid of something that might not exist, like ghost?

We started with discussing why we believe in mysterious things, and many questions branched from this single question, including fear as a method of nurturing children, use of fear in entertainment, cultural difference in the image of "ghost" in Wester and Eastern area, and so on. Not only in cultural context, but also depending on individuals, the image towards "ghost" varied so much, and we also realized the unconcious influence of our childhood experience on our view.

Is there anything that we can't buy/ obtain in exchange for money?

The topic was first generally about something whose worth can't be measured monetarily, but after we came up with "happiness and health" as possible answers, we discussed what is happiness in the first place. Thinking about "happiness" was definitely harder than we previously thought, but lots of new and fresh perspectives emerged, making the discussion more intriguing and enriching.

Starting with the definition of "religion", we thought over about what makes science seem like a religion, if so, what is the problem, the religious perspectives unique to Japan, etc.

This time, we discussed questions related to our emotions. We especially focused on “nostalgia”: whether it is a “good” or a “bad” emotion. We can say it’s good because feeling nostalgic sometimes strengthens the important or impressive memories. Or we can say it’s bad because it usually contains the sense of having lost something precious… What is your thought toward this complex thing?
